During meiosis I, the homologous chromosomes pair up and exchange genetic material in a process called crossing over. The resulting daughter cells have half the number of chromosomes as the original cell. During meiosis II, the sister chromatids separate and are distributed into four daughter cells.

Cell division is a tightly regulated process, and any errors in this process can lead to diseases such as cancer.
